President Nicusor Dan will participate on Thursday and Friday, in Brussels, in the European Council meeting and the Euro Summit in an expanded format.
According to the Presidential Administration, the agenda of the meetings includes major topics for the European Union, largely interconnected and reflecting the current global dynamics. These include strengthening the EU's economic competitiveness, the situation in the Middle East, support for Ukraine, the future European budget, as well as the measures necessary to strengthen the security and defense of the European Union.
The European leaders will also have a discussion with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, on the geopolitical situation and multilateralism.
The main topic of the meeting will be increasing the Union's economic competitiveness and strengthening the single market, by translating the conclusions agreed in previous meetings into concrete measures and clear deadlines. For Romania, the priority is to identify urgent solutions to reduce high energy prices, which affect both the population and industry. The Presidential Administration emphasizes that a long-term strategy is necessary, based on the development of energy interconnection projects and the valorization of indigenous clean energy resources. Romania supports secure access to resources, the diversification of partnerships and the avoidance of dominant positions, in order to protect the competitiveness and economic security of the EU.
The situation in the Middle East and its impact on energy prices will also be important points of discussion. European leaders will discuss the ways in which the European Union can contribute to reducing tensions and stabilizing the situation.
Nicusor Dan will emphasize that it is essential for European citizens, including the Romanians in the region, to be protected and that the effects of this conflict on the global economy, inflation, energy prices and trade flows are limited. The situation in Gaza will also be under the analysis of European leaders.
Another topic of the Brussels meeting is the continuation of support for Ukraine. European leaders will also discuss the possibilities of unblocking the first tranche of payments from the 90 billion euro financial support for Ukraine, agreed in December 2025. The Presidential Administration indicates that Nicusor Dan will insist on maintaining pressure on Russia through sanctions, given their already visible effects.
In the field of security and defense, the discussions will aim at a more efficient coordination of investments in the European defense industry and the improvement of military mobility. In this regard, Romania firmly supports projects that strengthen security on the Eastern Flank, in complementarity with NATO. Strengthening these capabilities is essential to respond to current challenges and to ensure the protection of European citizens.
Related to the future Multiannual Financial Framework of the European Union 2028-2034, the President of Romania will emphasize the importance of adequate financing to support national and European objectives, especially in terms of economic competitiveness.
