The results of the health prevention programs that have operated in the last 25 years are modest and this must change, declared on Tuesday the chairman of the Health and Family Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, Alexandru Rafila.

The College of Dentists of Romania (CMSR), in partnership with the Health and Family Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, organized, on Tuesday, a public debate dedicated to the state of oral health of Romanians and the reform directions of Romanian dentistry in public health policies.

"The results of the prevention programs that have operated in the last 25 years are modest and, obviously, this must change. The responsibility lies with the Ministry of Health, which clearly and categorically wants to develop these programs. The development of insurance service packages for dental services, as a complement to the packages discussed, should be analyzed by private insurers and authorities. Currently, access to dental services remains limited, most often due to geographical considerations, and is also accentuated by the lack of education and prevention programs," Rafila said, according to a statement sent to AGERPRES.

The President of CMSR, Florin Lăzărescu, stated that oral health must be viewed as an integral part of public health policies and that solutions can only come through collaboration between the profession, authorities, academia and civil society.

"Oral health cannot be built exclusively through treatment. Also, over 95% of dental activity in Romania is carried out in the private sector, which creates a professional and economic model distinct from other medical specialties. Unequal territorial distribution of dentists. There are urban areas where the offer of dental services is high, but also numerous rural communities or small towns where access to a dentist is limited or even non-existent. This is where one of the most important challenges arises, the real access of patients to dental services," said the president of CMSR.

The President of the Federation of European Dental Competent Authorities and Regulators (FEDCAR), David O'Flynn, showed that challenges related to access to dental services exist all over the world, but Romania has an important advantage: that it can build solutions through collaboration and by capitalizing on existing human resources.

According to the cited source, CMSR is considering a set of measures for equitable access of Romanians to oral health services, taking into account the real needs of the system, and among these are: increasing the CNAS budget for dentistry and expanding reimbursed preventive services, as well as reducing urban-rural imbalances through financial incentives.
