Speaking on Tuesday to the parliamentary Budget & Finance committees, Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu said that most of the waste sites for which Romania is currently under EU infringement are not state-owned, and the Ministry is trying to untangle the complex legal disputes surrounding these non-compliant landfills.
She explained that many of the operators responsible for closing and rehabilitating these sites failed to meet their obligations, and the state cannot legally step in to pay for work that private companies were required to carry out. Numerous court cases are ongoing, she added.
"Romanians should not have to pay for the incapacity, incompetence or even corruption of operators who opened these landfills, left us with infringement procedures, and then did nothing to close them," Buzoianu said.
She also noted that funding is available for the Doba landfill (Satu Mare County), where works can begin, but stressed that resolving the infringement cases depends on clearing the legal blockages around the privately owned sites.
