Arrivals and overnight stays in the establishments of tourists' reception with functions of tourists' accommodation, including apartments and rooms for
rent decreased by 3.7% and by 3%, respectively, in February 2026 compared to the same month last year, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Friday.
The arrivals in the establishments of tourists' reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) amounted to 785,500 persons, of which Romanian tourists accounted for 81.7% and foreign tourists 18.3%.
In February, the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists' reception totalled 1.528 million, of which Romanian tourists' overnight stays accounted for 79.4% and foreign tourists 20.6%.
According to the INS, in February 2026, the average duration of stay was 1.9 days for Romanian tourists and 2.2 days for foreign tourists.
In February 2026, the net use index of accommodation places was 22.8% on total tourists' accommodation structures (including apartments and rooms for rent), decreasing by 1.9 percentage points compared to the same period last year.
Official statistics also show that arrivals recorded in tourists' accommodation structures (including apartments and rooms for rent) between 1 January and 28 February 2026 totalled 1.573 million people, down 5.5% compared with the same period in 2025.
Of the total arrivals in the first two months of the year, Romanian tourists accounted for 81.7% in accommodation facilities, while foreign tourists represented 18.3%.
Overnight stays recorded in tourists' accommodation structures (including apartments and rooms for rent) during the same period totalled 3.014 million, down 5.8% compared with the same period in 2025.
Of the total overnight stays in the first two months of the year, Romanian tourists accounted for 78.8% in accommodation facilities, while foreign tourists represented 21.2%.
The average length of stay in January and February 2026 was 1.8 days for Romanian tourists and 2.2 days for foreign tourists.
The net use index of accommodation places between 1 January and 28 February 2026 was 21.5% across all accommodation structures (including apartments and rooms for rent), down 2.2 percentage points compared with the same period in 2025.
By county, the number of tourists' arrivals in the establishments of tourists' reception with functions of tourists' accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) in February 2026 recorded higher values in: Bucharest (257,600 people), Brasov (230,100 people) and Prahova (97,000 people), while overnight stays in the establishments of tourists' reception with functions of tourists' accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) were highest in: the Capital (536,900), Brasov (456,800) and Prahova (198,400).
By country, the largest numbers of foreign tourists staying in the establishments of tourists' reception with functions of tourists' accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) in the first two months of this year came from: Italy (33,700 people), Germany (21,800 people) and Israel (21,500 people).
The INS mentioned that the sample of accommodation structures was drawn from the list of authorised/classified accommodation facilities, downloaded from the website of the Ministry of Economy, Digitalisation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism - Department for Tourism, on 5 January 2026.
The list included 16,042 structures with more than 10 beds, of which 9,500 were accommodation facilities and 6,542 were apartments and rooms for rent. In February 2026, of the total accommodation structures, 5,848 units were undergoing major repairs and 1,220 did not complete the questionnaire for other reasons.
