The transatlantic relationship has a history that has brought stability and prosperity and is of crucial importance for the European Union and its member states, including Romania, President Nicusor Dan said on Friday.

He stressed that this was one of the key messages to emerge from discussions with European leaders at the informal meeting of the European Council, agerpres reports.

"For Romania, the United States of America is an essential strategic partner for our security, and we act accordingly. This approach is shared by a significant number of EU member states. Although there have been recent turbulences and some discontinuities in the transatlantic relationship, there are multiple solid arguments for its continuation and strengthening. Dialogue remains essential to ensure a constructive approach on both sides, including on sensitive issues such as the tariff regime," the head of state wrote on Facebook.

Nicusor Dan also said that, as regards the Arctic region, the unanimous conclusion of the informal discussions within the Council was one of solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, "the intention of the European Union, in coordination with NATO, being to invest in the defence of this area".

At the same time, he added, support for Ukraine was reaffirmed, along with the continuation of detailed military planning in the context of security guarantees. The President said that views were less aligned on the situation in Gaza, but that most states supported the need for active European involvement in the peace process.

"The importance of negotiating with the United States on the Charter of the Coalition for Peace initiated by President Donald Trump was also underlined, so that it is fully compatible with the international commitments already undertaken by the participating states and by the European Union," the President said.
