President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday that none of the leaders of the governing coalition, gathered at a meeting at Cotroceni Presidential Palace, had raised the issue of further tax increases beyond those already being implemented, stressing that Romanians 'have already paid a price' and that there would be no 'additional turbulence' in the period ahead.

The head of state met coalition leaders earlier this week, agerpres reports.

"I wanted to understand the situation regarding the two draft laws that have yet to be adopted - the reduction in public administration and the one on economic recovery. I was told they are very close to being passed by emergency ordinance. I asked about the budget and was told that debate could begin next week. Each of those present raised certain views regarding the budget. Overall, this coalition is moving forward. I did not see any indication to the contrary; through negotiation, which is necessary in politics, everyone appears willing to continue in this governing formula," Nicusor Dan said on private broadcaster Antena 3 CNN.

He added that inflation had reached 10% in Romania and that purchasing power had fallen by the same percentage.

"If swift measures had not been taken, the IMF might have intervened and the situation could have been worse. On the other hand, perhaps there were ways to make these adjustments without such a significant reduction in purchasing power," the President said.

Referring again to the meeting with coalition leaders, he stressed that there had been no discussions about additional tax rises.

"What I can say is that there will be no further turbulence. People have already paid a price. In the period ahead, there will be no turbulence that would cause them further hardship. (...) I can state firmly that none of the governing parties even raised the issue of any new tax increases beyond those already being implemented. That I can say with certainty," Nicusor Dan said.
