Metrorex proposes adjusting metro fares by about 40%, starting on May 1, 2026, with the price of a trip set to increase from 5 lei to 7 lei, according to a draft Order published on the website of the Ministry of Transport.

The fares for two trips would increase from 10 lei to 14 lei and for 10 trips from 40 lei to 55 lei.

Also, the 24-hour subscription will increase in price to 18 lei, from 12 lei currently, the one-week subscription to 60 lei, from 45 lei, the one-month subscription to 140 lei, from 100 lei, the 6-month subscription will increase to 700 lei, from 500 lei, and the one-year subscription to 1,300 lei, from 900 lei.

Regarding the tariffs for integrated metropolitan travel (Metrorex-STB), these would be: 9 lei for a single ticket for one trip - 120 minutes, 18 lei for a single ticket for two trips, 72 lei for a ticket for 10 trips, 23 lei for a 24-hour subscription, 79 lei for a week, 196 lei for a month, 980 lei for six months and 1,770 lei for a year.

Metro travel tickets purchased until the day before the application of the new fares will be able to be used until the number of trips is exhausted or their validity period expires.

The motivation of the draft Order emphasizes that the change in tariffs is determined by the fact that the subsidy provided for in the draft income and expenditure budget for 2026 of Metrorex is in the amount of 761,490,000 lei, which would lead to a negative result (loss) in the draft income and expenditure budget for 2026 in the amount of 451,241,030 lei.

Also, the tariff adjustment for 2026 is a measure assumed by the management of Metrorex S.A. and provided for both in the "Metrorex Reorganization, Restructuring and Financial Recovery Plan for the period 2025 - 2028, as well as in the company's Management Plan for February 2023 - February 2027 (updated November 2025).

According to the cited source, the measure to adjust metro fares will lead to a monthly increase in the company's own revenues by approximately 10,271,680 lei, a value that will contribute to reducing the financing deficit and a greater degree of coverage of the expenses of ensuring the public metro passenger transport service in safe conditions.

"Considering the above, if the adjustment of metro fares is approved starting on 01.05.2026, revenues from metro passenger transport would increase by approximately 100,988,000 lei compared to 2025, and revenues from compensating for 100% discounts for pupils and 90% for students, and free travel for revolutionaries and war veterans would increase by approximately 97,608,000 thousand lei compared to 2025," the motivation also states.

The last tariff adjustment took place in 2025, being approved by Order of the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure No. 4094/31.12.2024.
