Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday evening that the budget with which the Government is coming before Parliament is one that reflects the true possibilities of the country, pointing out that the most serious mistake would be to return "to the wasteful habits of the past" and sacrifice the future.
"Many times, from this rostrum, a budget with overestimated revenues and unachievable targets has been presented. Today, the Government comes before you with a budget that reflects the true possibilities of the country. (...) It is therefore a budget that tells the people the truth. The truth is that the money we produce as a country is not enough for everything we would like, and then the question is what should have priority - the comfort on debt of the present or the health of the future. We cannot have both now", said the Prime Minister, in the joint plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
The prime minister showed that, for years, "budgets have prioritized the present over debt", so that we have ended up paying annually only on interest the cost of a motorway.
"We built this budget on the basis of a slight economic growth, a growth that we can truly achieve in the current complicated circumstances at the national and international level. An important part of the budget goes towards investments, especially from European funds. This year is decisive for how much we manage to attract from the NRRP that ends in August. At the same time, we have projected a decreasing deficit for the second consecutive year, and this helps us keep our expenses under control and put our finances in order. We have foreseen the necessary amounts for the payment of interest", stated Ilie Bolojan.
According to him, the most important reform that this government is implementing is the fundamental change of the economic model "from toxic consumption on debt to investments that generate prosperity".
"This is exactly what we are doing with this draft budget. The 2026 state budget is therefore the result of the work of the last months of decisions and corrections and puts the economy on a more stable and predictable footing. The worst mistake we can make now is to relax and breathe a sigh of relief that we have passed the major jump of the last months, to return to the wasteful habits of the past and to sacrifice our future again. I believe that we are on the right path, but we have years of work ahead of us", the head of the Government said.
