The President of the Fiscal Council, Daniel Dăianu, claims that it is not right to block the budget debate for one billion lei, in conditions where people are suffering and we have the impact of the Middle East war.
"Look at this budget dispute. For a billion lei you blocked Romania's budget. For a billion lei! I don't want to offend them, but when you have wars, when people suffer, when you have the impact of this war in the Middle East, we flex our muscles in the corridors and in disputes regarding the adoption of the budget. It's not right," said Daniel Dăianu, at the debate on his work "Crises and the Authoritarian Temptation".
He also mentioned that the blockage was incomprehensible because the dispute was over a small amount.
"We live in times of trouble, unfortunately. Even democratic governments, with enlightened people, cannot deliver basic public goods. And out of desperation, people can throw themselves into the arms of sovereignists, populists. This coalition should not be dissolved so easily. I was referring to a blockage that is incomprehensible. If it were a blockage of 10 billion, 15 billion lei, that is, 0.7-0.8% of GDP, I would have understood. But not when it comes to a billion lei. And this had to be resolved. It is incomprehensible. I do not want to talk more. In recent days, we have had meetings with foreign investors, those to whom we want to make investments, countless. We, from the Fiscal Council, and colleagues from the NBR have these meetings. And it is a recurring question. There are two essential questions: Will fiscal-budgetary consolidation continue? And two, will you remain stuck? That is... And will you have political stability? But there is no point in commenting more, because you should know that Romania is not the black sheep of Europe. It is not. Romania has great vulnerability due to large deficits, the budget deficit, and in times of austerity it is difficult to have this correction.
