The government has announced the death of the former President of Romania Ion Iliescu, sending condolences to his family and all those close to him.
Ion Iliescu was 95 years old.
"With deep regret, the Government announces the death of the former President of Romania, Mr Ion Iliescu. The former president of the Romanian state passed away today, August 5, 2025, at the Agrippa Ionescu Emergency Clinical Hospital. The Romanian Government is sending its condolences to the family and to all those close to them," according to a press statement released by the government.
Details of the state funeral to be organised in Iliescu's honour will be made public as they become available.
