Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Melescanu told AGERPRES on Thursday that all consul general appointments by the government were made in compliance with the legal provisions.
The Foreign Minister's statement comes as the General Prosecutor's Office took action in rem, starting criminal prosecution after a complaint was filed against Melescanu.
The top diplomat said he wasn't notified about the case. "I learned from the media that the General Prosecutor's Office opened a case in rem in connection with the appointment of a consul general to Strasbourg. (...) I personally have not been informed whatsoever of this issue," Melescanu said.
The ForMin assured of the full compliance with the law in the process of the appointment of consuls general.
"I want to assure you that all appointments by the Government of Romania, all consul general appointments made by the Government of Romania, the one in Strasbourg included, were in full compliance with all the legal provisions," Melescanu emphasized.
The General Prosecutor's Office started prosecution in rem for abuse of office for favoring particular persons, after a criminal complaint was filed against Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Melescanu, the General Prosecutor's Press Bureau informs.
Media reported that Melescanu has allegedly appointed his stepson consul to Strasbourg. A government decision was published in the Official Journal on June 28, under which Sabin Pop was recalled as consul general to Strasbourg and Sorin Adrian Pirvulescu was appointed in his place.
