Government spokesperson Ioana Dogioiu said on Thursday that the prime minister and the government are "fully aware" that this is not an easy period for Romanian society, but stressed that Romania needs to reach a balanced budget.
She made the remarks when asked about the government's message to those who protested on Thursday in Bucharest and several other cities, at AUR's initiative, against the recently adopted fiscal-budgetary measures.
"The prime minister and the government are perfectly aware that this is not an easy period for Romanian society. It is a difficult time, one that involves costs, discomfort and even a degree of hardship. But it is also a necessary phase, part of a treatment that may be unpleasant, yet essential for Romania to reach budgetary balance, which will then allow sustainable growth on a healthy basis," Dogioiu said at a press conference at Victoria Palace.
She added that, despite public dissatisfaction, the government's responsibility is "to put things in order, regardless of the political cost".
"No one is happy that there are constraints, frustrations or tensions in society. But I believe this government has the duty to get us out of the woods, regardless of the political cost, which of course exists and cannot be denied," Dogioiu said.
