Vice-president of the European Parliament Nicu Stefanuta has contacted the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Interior and prime minister Ilie Bolojan and asked for the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) in the context of the floods that caused major damage in Neamt and Suceava counties, informs a press release sent to AGERPRES by his office.
According to hydrological warnings, several important rivers in the country are registering significant increases in flow, exceeding the alert quotas, with an imminent danger of overflowing. There is a real risk that the floods will extend to other regions, and the delay in support measures may lead to a much more serious crisis, the MEP from the Greens/European Free Alliance group believes.
The EU Civil Protection Mechanism offers concrete support in such cases. By activating it, Romania could benefit from intervention teams, rescue equipment, technical support for damage assessment and updated mapping through Copernicus, plus advanced hydrological monitoring through EFAS. All of this is coordinated through the ERCC - the European Emergency Response Centre, ready to respond in hours, not days, the press release also states.
"I encourage the authorities to take immediate measures to activate this European mechanism. Let's not wait for the situation to worsen. We must use all available tools to protect citizens and ensure a rapid and efficient response," said Nicu Stefanuta, quoted in the press release.
