The National Weather Administration (ANM) on Monday, issued code yellow and code orange advisories of unstable weather and heat, valid for August 7 and 8 in different areas of Romania, as well as a thermal discomfort warning for Tuesday.
Thus, on Monday, until 20:00hrs, the code orange of excessive heat is in force in nine south and southeast counties. The heatwave will persist in Oltenia, Muntenia and Dobrogea, where thermal discomfort will remain particularly high. Lows will not drop below 20 degrees Celsius. In Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Ilfov, Calarasi, Ialomita, Constanta and particularly in the lowland parts of Mehedinti and Bucharest City, highs will range between 36 and 39 degrees Celsius, with the temperature-humidity index (THI) expected to exceed critical 80.
In the same timeframe, the western, northern, central and northeast regions and the highlands will be under code yellow of atmospheric instability including strong winds, torrential rain showers, frequent lightning and hail. Precipitation will exceed 20 l /sq.m. and 40 to 50 l /sq.m. Extreme weather should occur in the evening in the southern regions as well, but over smaller areas.
On the other hand, in northern Oltenia, as well as Muntenia and Dobrogea highs will range between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius, while the temperature-humidity index (THI) will be around critical 80.
According to the weather service, August 7, 20:00hrs - August 8, 08:00hrs, 23 counties in southern and eastern Transylvania, most of Moldavia, eastern and southern Carpathians, and the northern half of Muntenia and Oltenia, atmospheric instability will generate high winds, thunderstorms, strong gales and hail. Precipitation will exceed 20 l /sq.m. locally and 40 l /sq.m. over restricted area. Such phenomena are also expected in Dobrogea, southern Oltenia and Muntenia but over smaller areas.
Also, on Tuesday, August 8, a thermal discomfort warning will be in place in most regions. In Oltenia, Muntenia and Dobrogea on Tuesday afternoon, thermal discomfort will be high, with the temperature-humidity index expected to exceed critical 80. At the same time, in southern Oltenia and southwest Muntenia the highs will generally be between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius, and thermal discomfort will also be high.
According to the ANM maps, four southern counties - Mehedinti, Dolj, Olt and Teleorman - will be under code yellow of heat on August 8.
Starting Wednesday, August 9, the heatwave will gradually expand and intensify.
ANM says it will update its advisories to take into reelect the latest weather developments.
