Trump, Macron topping Romanians' confidence in world leaders (poll)

Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron lead in the Romanians' ranking of trust in world leaders, according to a survey conducted by INSCOP Research between January 28 and February 6, on a commission from the New Strategy Centre.

In terms of "Trust in world leaders", Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron lead, with 33% of respondents stating that they have a lot and quite a lot of trust in the American and French presidents (up from 30.5% and 26.3% respectively in June 2025). The ranking continues with Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, with a trust capital of 23.7%, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine, with 23.1%, and Friedrich Merz, German chancellor, with 20.8%. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban with 20.5% and Russian President Vladimir Putin with 17.5% (as against 15.6% in June 2025) are bringing up the rear.

According to the poll, 13.9% of respondents say they have a lot of trust in Donald Trump, 19.1% have a lot of confidence, 18.9% quite a little, and 45% very little or not at all. 1.3% do not know or do not answer, while 1.7% say they do not know it. The American president is trusted especially by voters of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), young people under 30 and people over 60, those with secondary education, rural dwellers. National Liberal Party (PNL) and Save Romania Union (USR) voters, women, people between 30 and 59, those with a higher education background and the inhabitants of Bucharest and the large urban areas have the least trust in Donald Trump.

At the same time, 8.6% of the respondents say that they trust Emmanuel Macron very much, while 24.3% quite a lot, 14% quite little and 46.6% very little or not at all. 2.6% do not know or do not answer, and 3.8% say they do not know it. The French president is trusted especially by PNL and USR voters, young people under 30, people with a higher education background, and the inhabitants of Bucharest. AUR voters, people between 30 and 59 , those with a primary education background and rural residents have the least trust Macron.

Asked how much trust they have in Ursula von der Leyen, 6.4% of those interviewed say a lot, 17.2% quite a lot, 14.1% quite little, and 50.8% very little or not at all. The share of non-answers is 2.9%, while 8.5% say they do not know it. PNL and USR voters, people with a higher education background and residents of Bucharest tend to trust Ursula von der Leyen the most. PSD and AUR voters, people between 30 and 44, those a with primary education background have little or no confidence in the head of the European Commission.

Asked how much trust they have in Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 7% said they have a lot, 16.1% quite a lot, 15.5% quite little, and 56.5% very little or not at all. The share of non-answers is 2.3%, while 2.5% say they do not know him. The Ukrainian president is trusted especially by PNL and USR voters, young people under 30, people with a higher education background, and the inhabitants of Bucharest. PSD and AUR voters, people between 30 and 44 , those with a primary education background and rural residents have the least confidence in Zelenskyy.

According to the poll, 6% of respondents say they trust Friedrich Merz a lot, 14.7% say they trust him quite a lot, 15.3% quite a little, and 38% very little or not at all. The share of non-answers is 3.1%, while 22.9% say they do not know him. The chancellor of Germany is trusted especially by PNL and USR voters, people with a higher education background, and the inhabitants of Bucharest. AUR voters, people between 30 and 44, those with a primary education background and employees in the private sector have the least trust in Merz.

Regarding confidence in Hungary's Viktor Orban, 9.8% of the participants in the survey say that they trust him very much, 10.7% quite a lot, 17.3% quite a little, and 55.9% very little or not at all. The share of non-answers is 2.7%, while 3.5% say they do not know him. The Hungarian prime minister is trusted especially by AUR voters and public sector employees. PNL and USR voters, people between 30 and 44 years old, those with a higher education, residents of Bucharest and private sector employees have the least confidence in the Hungarian leader.

The survey also shows that 8.9% of Romanians say they trust Vladimir Putin a lot, 8.6% quite a lot, 9.6% quite a little, and 70.2% very little or not at all. 1.8% do not know or do not answer, while 0.9% say they do not know it. Putin is trusted especially by AUR voters and young people under 30. PSD, PNL and USR voters, women, people over 60 , those with a higher education background tend not to trust the Russian president. PNL and USR voters, young people under 30, people with a higher education background, residents of Bucharest and the large urban areas and public sector employees have the least confidence in the Russian leader.

On Thursday, the results of the sociological survey "4 years of war in Ukraine. The profound impact on public opinion in Romania", conducted by INSCOP Research, between January 28 and February 6, on a commission from the New Strategy Centre were released

The survey method was the questionnaire interview. The data were collected using the CATI method (telephone interviews) on a sample of 1,100 people. The sample is representative of the significant socio-demographic categories (sex, age, occupation) for the non-institutionalised population of Romania, aged 18 and over. The maximum allowed error of the data is ą 3%, at a confidence level of 95%.
