President Nicusor Dan's visit to Kyiv is on Ukraine's agenda, ambassador Ihor Prokopchuk said at a press conference on Thursday, adding that he hopes the visit will take place this year.
"Presidents Nicusor Dan and Volodymyr Zelensky have had the opportunity to meet in international formats. President Dan was in Odessa last year as part of such a format. Two weeks ago, our presidents spoke by phone about key issues regarding Ukraine's security situation and areas where we should strengthen cooperation. The topic of President Dan's visit is on our agenda. We are in constant contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidential Administration so that this visit delivers the expected results. Let me remind you that we want to elevate the bilateral relationship to strategic partnership. We are working on this, on a document that will define the essence and foundations of this partnership. I hope the visit will take place this year, but I do not have a specific date," the diplomat said.
He noted that no Romanian president has visited Kyiv in the four years since the start of the war.
"President Zelensky was in Bucharest in October 2023, and we would very much like to welcome President Dan in Ukraine," Prokopchuk added.
Regarding Ukraine - Romania cooperation on drone production, the ambassador said efforts are underway.
"We have close relations between the two Defense Ministries. The Romanian Defense minister visited Ukraine last year, and high-ranking officials from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry visited Romania at the end of last year and the beginning of this one. One of the areas discussed was cooperation in defense production. This was also addressed in the context of the SAFE Program. Ukraine is offering this cooperation, and there is interest on the Romanian side. The dialogue is exploring what we could produce together," ambassador Prokopchuk explained.
