On Wednesday, the Senate adopted a draft law establishing June 15 as the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Mineriad of June 13-15, 1990, and of the Anti-Democratic Repression.

The legislative proposal was initiated by two PNL (National Liberal Party) deputies, Gabriel Andronache and Florin Roman.

The vote recorded 87 votes in favour and three abstentions.

'The day of June 15 is hereby established as the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Mineriad of June 13-15, 1990, and of the Anti-Democratic Repression, with the aim of honouring the memory of the victims of the violent repression orchestrated by the state in June 1990, promoting civic education and preventing the recurrence of such atrocities. On this day, public authorities, educational institutions, the media and non-governmental organisations are invited to organise cultural, educational and commemorative events dedicated to the memory of the victims and to the promotion of democratic values. To mark the occasion, Romanian Television and Public Radio shall broadcast, free of charge, themed programmes about the events of June 13-15, 1990. The national flag shall be flown at half-mast at central and local public institutions,' the draft stipulates.

According to the legislative act, funding for the organisation of events will be provided from local and central budgets, within the limits of funds approved annually.

The Senate is the first chamber notified of the draft law, with the Chamber of Deputies serving as the decision-making body.
