Romania won three medals on Tuesday, on the first day of the European Ice Swimming Championships in Molveno, Italy, one gold and two silvers.

Daria Silisteanu won gold in the women's 50 m backstroke, setting a new world record at 31.34. The silver medal went to the compatriot Ioana Gadea, 33.57.

"It was a very nice experience, but it was very cold. At first, I thought about stopping, because I was running out of breath and unable to control my breathing. I motivated myself by telling myself that I can swim harder and that it will be over soon," Silisteanu told AGERPRES. She said she did not expect to set a world record, but she is very happy for her performance.

In her turn, Ioana Gadea said: "It was a race beyond my expectations. I am very satisfied, especially since I was surpassed only by my teammate Daria, who we know has exceptional results at international level in the normal pool." She will also compete in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

Andrei Iaschiu won the silver medal in men's 100 m butterfly, clocking in at 1:03. 57, losing to Russian George Ghimalov (58.52).

Romania has lined up a team of 26 swimmers.
