President Nicusor Dan on Wednesday said he had not consulted the leaders of the governing coalition regarding the appointment of the heads of the major prosecutor's offices.

'I have the constitutional authority to take a position on these matters. This entire process began with an act of will on the part of a prosecutor who undertook to seek a leadership position,' the head of state told a press conference held at the Cotroceni Palace.

He stressed that magistrates must act within their own professional body. 'Have the courage and present yourself before a panel!,' the president added.

'It is somehow implied in the public space, ‘oh, poor them, there would be some exceptional prosecutors, but someone did not allow them.' No one stopped them from coming forward. If you want to fight the mafia, at least have the courage to come and present yourself before a panel, even if you lose. For instance, between Mr Florin Pirlog and Ms Chiriac, I believe Ms Chiriac is far more suited to be Prosecutor General, but I greatly appreciated the fact that Mr Pirlog came forward. He said what he thinks about this system, how he wants to reform it, what the overall problems are, I appreciated that,' the head of state added.

President Nicusor Dan announced on Wednesday that he had signed the decrees for the appointment of the heads of the major prosecutor's offices.

The proposals had been submitted to the head of state on Tuesday by Justice Minister Radu Marinescu.
