Romania sent to the European Commission a portfolio of projects meant for the development of the defence industry and increase of military mobility, through the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) mechanism.
According to a Government press release, approximately 70pct of the projects attached to the application submitted by Romania include purchases of military equipment for the development of the national defence industry, with the remaining 30pct earmarked for increasing military mobility in terms of transportation and logistical connectivity.
"At the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, we have concluded Romania's application for the SAFE programme (...). The goal we seek is to develop the national defence industry, transport infrastructure and logistical interconnection," head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister Mihai Jurca stated.
The project proposals were established within the Working Group set up by the Decision approved by Romania's Supreme Council for National Defence (CSAT) on April 30, 2025, and led by the Prime Minister's Chancellery, in close consultation with the Presidential Administration team, the Ministries of National Defence, Interior, Economy, Transport, and other institutions in the national defence, public order and national security system.
The SAFE instrument is a temporary EU financial instrument, with a budget of 150 billion EUR, consisting of loans. The essence of this programme consists in the European solidarity regarding the need for modern and resilient collective defence, by stimulating industrial cooperation, reducing fragmentation and creating an efficient single market for defence equipment.
The borrowing is granted based of a national defence industry investment plan approved by the European Commission and the funds can be used until December 31, 2030.
