Foreign affairs minister Oana Toiu stated on Thursday that any type of conversation inciting to hatred is something that must be avoided.
She participated in the ceremony occasioned by the European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day.
According to the foreign affairs minister, Romania currently "does not run from the truth" and society reached a level of maturity understanding that "these black episodes" no longer have to be kept "hidden on the last page."
Toiu added that injustice does not always increase in institutions, but also in the Romanian society.
The head of the Romanian diplomacy mentioned that 20 years ago, she volunteered at camps attended by Roma children, where she told the little ones about their history, but at the same time, she also learned new things herself.
"I was also learning for the first time about these episodes that were missing from history books," Oana Toiu pointed out.
She confessed that she learned, in this context, "the power with which each family defended their children."
"Any type of conversation inciting to hatred is something we must guard against. (...) We must see where hatred begins, where discrimination begins," she pointed out.
According to the foreign affairs minister, the sacrifice of those who died without fault cannot be erased, but it can be honoured through our present behaviour.
