The leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Sorin Grindeanu, held talks in Brussels on Thursday with members of the leadership of the Party of European Socialists (PES) on the urgency of implementing measures to protect the population and the business environment, stressing that the essence of the left's role in government is to act first and foremost in the interests of people, especially those who cannot defend themselves.

In discussions both with the PES Secretary General, Mr Giacomo Filibeck, and with the leader of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, Ms Iratxe García, I stressed the clear need to continue a pro-European governing formula. However, we want governance to be balanced, with a prime minister who, alongside absolutely necessary measures to reduce public spending, also takes decisions to protect Romanians against inflation - particularly that generated by the sharp rise in fuel prices,' Grindeanu wrote on Facebook.
He added that he ruled out any political cooperation with AUR (Alliance for the Union of Romanians).
'Both I and the PES leadership rule out any political cooperation with AUR and believe that recent signals of rapprochement between the National Liberal Party (PNL) and AUR represent an irresponsible political venture that threatens Romania's European future,' Grindeanu stated.
On the same day, the PSD leader also met with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. During the discussions, Grindeanu explained that the Social Democrats have launched a broad internal consultation aimed at assessing the ten months of governance.
