Politehnica Bucharest has launched four strategic projects in microelectronics worth almost EUR 90 million, won through the National Recovery and Resilience Programme (PNRR) call for Transnational and Multinational Projects - low-power processors and semiconductor chips, part of the European IPCEI Microelectronics & Communication Technologies (ME/CT) programme.
According to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Saturday, the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest is involved in all four projects as an indirect participant, alongside leading industrial partners Aumovio, Robert Bosch and NXP Semiconductors Romania.
'We want Politehnica Bucharest to be a place where technologies are designed, tested and validated and then reach real products. We want to become a hub of excellence in microelectronics, where we attract highly qualified specialists and foreign investment and where we start adding value to Romania's microelectronics industry. These projects mean stronger laboratories, larger research teams and more opportunities for students and researchers to work directly with industry. We want this hub to become a reference point in Europe for microelectronics and to lead to significant economic growth in the region,' Rector Mihnea Costoiu is quoted in the release as saying.
According to the same source, chips are the 'brains' of modern technology, being found in cars, phones, medical equipment and many systems that keep the economy moving.
Through these projects, Politehnica Bucharest aims to become a research and development hub for the microelectronics industry in Romania, a place where research is carried out, specialists are trained and a solid foundation is built for new investments and increasingly large projects.
The Bucharest-based higher education institution trains hundreds of graduates every year in electronics, mechatronics, telecommunications and information technologies.
These initiatives complement investments already underway in microelectronics, including through the National Semiconductor Technologies Platform, as well as national and international projects carried out by Politehnica Bucharest in the field of semiconductors.
With a tradition of over 200 years, Politehnica Bucharest is the largest university in Romania.
