Romania's President Nicusor Dan rejected on Saturday the idea of organising a referendum on the unification of Romania with the Republic of Moldova.

He said in Focsani, where he attended events dedicated to the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities, that such a measure is not justified as long as 'there is no will on the part of the Republic of Moldova.'

'There is no case for it as long as there is no will on the part of the Republic of Moldova,' the head of state said.

The President brought to mind that Romania has a commitment towards the Republic of Moldova to support it in its European path.

'It is an issue that belongs strictly, strictly to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. Romania, as I represent Romania, Romania has a commitment towards the Republic of Moldova to support it in its European path. This is the objective that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, through the authorities they have mandated, have. In addition, there are other related issues, such as energy, economic connectivity and all the rest. And Romania supports the Republic of Moldova in this context. We respect the will of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova regarding the objectives they have chosen. If at some point that opinion changes, we will act accordingly,' Nicusor Dan said.
