The Republic of Moldova is expanding coordinated border control with Romania and joint control with Ukraine to speed up the safe and efficient movement of people and goods, Moldovan Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin said in an interview published on Friday by news agency Moldpres.
"At the Moldovan - Romanian border, coordinated control is already operational at Leuseni - Albita and Giurgiulesti - Galati, and will soon be extended to Cantemir - Falciu, Sculeni and Lipcani - Radauti Prut," Misail-Nichitin explained.
At the Moldovan - Ukrainian border, joint control is legally established at nine crossing points, seven of which are functional, with two suspended due to the war. No further expansion is planned for now, she added.
Misail-Nichitin noted that Moldova is also streamlining traffic through digitalised procedures, additional frontline staff and extra lanes where infrastructure allows. The Border Police is implementing the government's Growth Plan by purchasing specialised equipment, including IT systems for biometric checks, and by modernising existing crossings and building new ones, Agerpres informs.
"Together with Romania, we plan to build four new bridges across the Prut by 2030. In the future, we want each district to have at least one Prut bridge, developed with Romanian counties and regions," she said, stressing that all the measures aim to ensure faster, safer and more predictable cross-border traffic.
The minister also announced ongoing negotiations with several countries, including Romania, on the mutual recognition of driving licences. Moldovans in Italy, Latvia, Spain, the UK, Greece, Israel, Turkey, Albania and Lithuania can already exchange their licences without taking theory or practical exams.
