Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete said on Tuesday that the burn centres in Timisoara and Targu Mures will most likely be put into use this summer.
"The three burn centres were started in 2022. In Timisoara and Targu Mures, the buildings are completed, work is now under way to install equipment and ensure operational flows. Sometime this summer, we will put both into use. The first and only severe burn centre for children, in Bucharest, which is being built in the courtyard of the 'Grigore Alexandrescu' Hospital, has experienced some delays, but these are being recovered. Work is already under way on the fourth floor. We estimate that it will also be completed next spring," according to the Health minister, who attended on Tuesday the Healthcare Forum 2026 - "The Truth about Romania's Health," organised by "Adevarul."
He added that when he took over the office at the Health Ministry all three centers were "blocked."
In his view, beyond infrastructure, the alignment of care protocols and standards are more important and announced a collaboration with the Military Hospital in Brussels.
"Yesterday, I paid an official visit to Brussels, at the Military Hospital, the largest and most advanced severe burn center in Europe, where we sent patients over the years - including now, there are three patients admitted there. We will include the expertise of this center in opening the hospitals in Romania. I believe it is very important. I have discussed this yesterday with the representatives of this hospital, who showed availability to come to Romania, tour the two new centers - Timisoara and Targu Mures - for fine-tuning, so to speak, the last adjustments related to flow and organisation, taking into account their activity and vast experience in this area," Minister Rogobete said.
According to him, the medical teams in Romania will also travel to Brussels in order to adapt to the new standards in this area.
"Besides the infrastructure which now exists, they need something essential which, unfortunately, is often ignored - they need discipline, discipline in movements, therapeutic conduct and gestures," the minister also said.
