Approximately 1.4% of companies in Romania concentrate 54% of the total turnover, while industry generates the largest share of profit, almost 39%, said on Tuesday the president of the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIR), Mihai Daraban, at a specialized conference.

"At the end of autumn, we had the National Top of Companies, which we organize quite scientifically, and from there we draw some conclusions regarding the polarization of the national economy and the share of certain fields of activity. In the first 10 places, in all 7 fields of activity, there were 13,078 companies, i.e. 1.42% of the total number of companies that submitted their balance sheets last year, 917,881. But don't forget that this 1.42% achieved 54% of the total turnover, i.e. 287 billion euros", mentioned Mihai Daraban, at the conference "Romania 2026-2040. Industry 4.0-5.0".

According to him, almost 44% of the turnover was achieved by trade, and 32.8% by industry. On the other hand, of the total profit of 53.28 billion euros recorded last year, industry ranked first, with a share of 38.68%, Daraban said.

"I know we tend to say that we are deindustrialized. We are, unfortunately, a subcontractor economy, but we still have 206,000 people working in the automotive industry in Romania, about 68,000 in the furniture industry, so there are things we cannot ignore. Unfortunately, Eurostat says that we are in last place in innovation and research. We don't necessarily have to think about research institutes, but simply about the fact that we don't have a Romanian brand with high added value", added the CCIR president.

In his opinion, what differentiates Romania in the last 20 years from other countries in Central and Eastern Europe are two directions: the way of absorbing European funds and the level of foreign investments.

"I really believe that, in the future, two areas will be able to make a difference: processed agricultural products, the food industry, and energy, in all its forms. We need to come down to earth, see what we can do with what we have and set some priorities," Mihai Daraban also said.

At the same time, he emphasized that he still does not have much data related to last year.

"Unfortunately, for the entire year 2025 we still do not have much data. You know very well that companies are only now starting to submit their balance sheets to the Tax Authorities. Even with the deadline of May 31, we believe that we will have a clear picture of the economy somewhere around August 1 - September 1, because even after May 31 there are companies that, not out of malice, but for various reasons, audits and so on, submit their balance sheets later," the CCIR president also said.

The conference "Romania 2026-2040. Industry 4.0-5.0" was organized on Tuesday by the Association for Economic-Social Studies and Forecasts (ASPES) and the Romanian Institute for Smart Industry Innovation (IRISI) - Iasi, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR).
