Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete on Saturday said that 14 new hospitals are currently under construction through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
"There are currently 14 hospitals under construction (through the PNRR - editor's note), and we have 14 construction sites for new hospitals. At the Ministry of Health, we signed contracts for 24 hospitals, although the European Commission's target was 19. We deliberately overcontracted to ensure we meet the target in case certain sites face delays or are blocked. We will retain in the PNRR the hospitals that can actually be built and that means the 14 that currently have this potential. The remainder will be completed using other funding sources. We are keeping 14 construction sites within the PNRR. We are relying on these 14, and we are also counting on the European Parliament's resolution to extend the PNRR. Of course, we are waiting for the European Commission to make a decision on this," said the minister of Health during a visit to the burn treatment centre construction site at the "Grigore Alexandrescu" Emergency Hospital for Children.
He brought to mind that in 2022, when he took over the secretary of state portfolio within the Health Ministry, he found three projects for burn centre block, nonetheless those projects were cleared in the period 2022-2023.
Referring to the situation at the "Grigore Alexandrescu" Emergency Hospital for Children, the ministers said the works are lagging behind one year due to bureaucratic blockages but he discussed with the entrepreneurs and the medical unit manager and he was assured that the works would be sped up.
