Thousands of kilometres of electric fences will be set up in Romania to reduce the instances in which people end up in conflict with wild animals, according to the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Forestry (MMAP).
"We promised a package of balanced measures for the management of human-bear conflicts and here we deliver the promises made! This programme is a prevention tool, because we aim to reduce the instances in which people come into conflict with wild animals, especially in communities where brown bear incidents are frequent. The approval of this funding joins the activities carried out by the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Forestry under the implementation project of the National Action Plan for the Conservation of the Brown Bear Population in Romania. Electric fences significantly reduce the risk of attacks and damage, without injuring the animals or altering their natural behaviour. It protects households, apiaries, farms, as well as the natural routes of animals. Field data clearly show: where we prevent, conflicts decrease. And that means more safety for people and more respect for nature," Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu said in a social media post on the ministry's website, agerpres reports.
The programme is rounded up by the measures of the project Implementation of the National Action Plan for the Conservation of the Brown Bear Population in Romania.
The Environmental Fund Administration (AFM) previously told a news conference that it approved almost RON 24.9 million in funding to reduce conflicts between humans and wild animals, under the Programme on the Protection of Wildlife Species.
The programme consolidates a responsible approach, based on prevention, technological solutions and respect for nature, which supports the safety of communities and the protection of biodiversity in the long term.
Official data show that, so far under this programme, applications have been approved from 1,635 beneficiaries
