Romania's Defence Minister Radu Miruta, who was in Brussels on Wednesday, had a meeting with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.

According to the Romanian Defence Ministry (MApN), during the discussions, the Romanian official highlighted the importance of strengthening the defence dimension of the European Union, pointing to the need to ensure adequate allocations through the future multiannual financial frameworks to support funding the European defence industry.

Miruta pleaded for a strengthened approach at European level in order to simplify defence procedures and instruments, so that member states can access dedicated European funds more efficiently.

A point of interest of the conversation was the importance of the SAFE initiative (Action for Europe's Security) to Romania, both in terms of strengthening the defence industrial and technological base, and in terms of increasing resilience in the Black Sea region.

The two officials also discussed Romania's proposal that, for a continuation of the SAFE programme, a regulation should be devised that would include the exact mapping of existing industrial facilities and their direct inclusion in the programme.

At the same time, Miruta and Metsola discussed the danger of disinformation and the technical versus political solutions regarding this scourge.

Amid the latest security developments in the Eastern Neighbourhood, Miruta reiterated the importance of maintaining increased attention on the Black Sea region, in the context of the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine, as well as the broader implications generated by instability in other regions, including the Middle East. The Romanian official stressed the need for a consistent and uniform approach at European and Euro-Atlantic level, in close coordination with NATO.

"Today's discussions reconfirmed the strategic relevance of NATO's eastern flank for Euro-Atlantic security. The Minister of National Defence highlighted Romania's consistent contribution to the measures to strengthen the NATO deterrence and defence posture, as well as the firm commitment to increasing investments in the field of defence. Regarding the support provided to Ukraine, the Romanian official reiterated Romania's consistent support for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, underscoring the importance of continuing humanitarian, financial and military assistance, as well as support for Ukraine's European path. The meeting reconfirmed the common commitment to strengthening European security and defence, in an international context marked by complex and dynamic challenges," according to MApN.
