The relaunch of the AGRI (Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania Interconnector) project, intended for the transport of natural gas from the Caspian Sea region, was discussed on Wednesday in Bucharest between the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR), Mihai Daraban, and the ambassador of Georgia to Romania, Tamar Beruchashvili.

According to a press release from the CCIR, sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday, the AGRI project, designed for the transport of natural gas from the Caspian region, through Azerbaijan and Georgia, crossing the Black Sea via LNG ships, involves the construction of two specific liquefaction terminals.

"The figures tell us that the economic relationship between Romania and Georgia is going in the right direction, but they also show us an untapped potential. Georgia is our main trading partner in the South Caucasus and, however, bilateral exchanges remain below the real potential of the two economies - and the role of the CCIR is precisely to reduce this distance. AGRI is not just an energy project - it is a project that aims at Romania's energy independence. Liquefied natural gas transported through this route represents a sustainable and efficient solution. We have partners, we have the route, we have the technology. What is missing is the political will at the European level, and the CCIR will work to build it through all available channels, including the European chamber system", declared the CCIR president in a release.

In turn, Tamar Beruchashvili reiterated the strategic importance of the Middle Corridor - the trade route that connects China and Kazakhstan, crosses the Caspian Sea, passes through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey and reaches Europe, offering a viable alternative to the northern routes and the Suez Canal: "The Middle Corridor is not just another option - it is a strategic necessity in the current context. Georgia is at the heart of this corridor and is ready to play the role that our geography and determination give us: that of a bridge between Asia and Europe", the Georgian ambassador to Romania pointed out in the quoted press release.
