1,091 companies and authorised sole traders entered insolvency in January-February 2026

The number of companies and authorised sole traders (PFAs) that entered insolvency in the first two months of 2026 stood at 1,091, up by 13.17% compared with the same period in 2025, when 964 insolvencies were recorded, according to data published on the website of the National Trade Register Office (ONRC).

The highest number of companies and sole traders entering insolvency was recorded in Bucharest, namely 222, a figure down by 8.64% compared with the first two months of 2025.

The next places in the insolvency rankings are held by the counties of Cluj, with 71 insolvencies (up 18.33%), Bihor - 64 (down 12.33%), Timis - 40 (up 2.56%), Prahova - 39 (up 18.18%), Ilfov - 38 (down 17.39%), Maramures - 36 (up 89.47%), Arad - 36 (up 89.47%) and Buzau - 33 (up 37.5%).

The fewest insolvencies were recorded in the counties of Caras-Severin - 4 (down 50% compared with January-February 2025), Covasna - 5 (down 16.67%), Alba - 6 (down 53.85%), Botosani - 8 (down 20%), Gorj - 8 (up 14.29%), Harghita - 8 (double compared with the first two months of the previous year) and Mehedinti - 8 (down 11.11%).

By field of activity, the highest number of insolvencies was recorded in wholesale and retail trade and the repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, namely 185 (down 26.29% compared with the first two months of 2025), followed by construction - 166 (down 9.29%), manufacturing - 97 (down 18.49%) and transport and storage - 84 (down 26.32%).

In February 2026, a total of 562 insolvencies were recorded nationwide, the highest numbers being in Bucharest - 114, Bihor- 36, Maramures - 23, Prahova - 23, Brasov - 19 and Cluj - 18.
