Chair of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor said on Wednesday, at the inauguration of a sports hall in the Mures County commune of Brancovenesti, that Romania faces a very serious demographic problem, and that investments in nurseries, kindergartens, schools and sports facilities can provide a better institutional framework for families.
"This is an important investment, a project that was first put on paper some 10-15 years ago. Works started three years ago and I am glad we managed to complete it (...). That is why, when we agreed to join the government, we had several objectives related to local communities and to another extremely important issue - the demographic problem. We have seen that Romania, among many other issues, faces a very serious problem related to birth rates. In 2024, Romania recorded the lowest number of births in hundreds of years. There have never been fewer children born than in 2024. That is why we believe that by ensuring the necessary investments in nurseries, kindergartens, schools and sports halls, we can provide a better institutional framework for every family and every child," the UDMR leader said.
Kelemen Hunor added that any government, at any time, should have a single objective: serving local communities and finding the best solutions to build a more predictable and better future for every community and every individual.
"If we fail to pursue this objective, then governing and participating in government make no sense," the UDMR president said.
He also noted that he did not come empty-handed to the inauguration of the sports hall in Brancovenesti, built with an investment of 8.3 million lei from the state budget, but brought footballs and basketballs as gifts for the children.
