The number of unjustified calls to 112 has fallen in recent years, but remains high, according to information provided on Saturday by the Special Telecommunications Service (STS) on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the emergency number, according to Agerpres.
The year 2025 marked the lowest level of unjustified calls since the launch of 112, accounting for 36.16 percent of total calls, the quoted source said.
The STS 112 operators handled over 8.8 million calls last year, nearly 64 percent of which required the intervention of authorities.
"The trend over the last 10 years shows that in 2025 the number of non-urgent calls was three times lower than in 2015. (...) Regarding abusive calls, there was also a decrease of 10.47 percent compared with 2024. The number of people who call repeatedly or with bad intent remains significant: 2,262,177 such calls were handled in 2025. In these cases, according to the legislation, the Special Telecommunications Service reports cases of abusive 112 calls to the Romanian Police for identification and sanctioning," the STS press release mentioned.
The counties with the highest levels of unjustified 112 calls are Arges, Gorj and Vrancea, while Cluj, Bucharest-Ilfov and Bihor are at the opposite end.
Currently, five complementary methods for locating emergency calls are available in Romania, of which the solution based on location-determined information (ILD) is unique at European level, the STS mentioned.
