Algeria has officially expressed its intention to import from Romania, during 2027, a volume exceeding one million sheep, including, for the first time, sheep carcasses, the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) informs on Thursday.
'A central element of the new trade strategy is the diversification of the export portfolio. The shift from exclusively exporting livestock to exporting carcasses (chilled and frozen meat) represents a major success of the negotiations led by ANSVSA. This development enables Romanian processors to add value to domestic products, supporting the development of slaughtering facilities and meeting the highest Halal certification standards required by the Algerian market,' the ANSVSA press release said.
According to the same source, the sharp increase in export volumes is the direct result of the institution's efforts to ensure veterinary compliance and to simplify certification procedures. Through rigorous negotiation of health certificates and ongoing dialogue with Algeria's veterinary authorities, technical barriers have been removed, providing Romanian farmers with predictable access to one of the most dynamic markets in North Africa, the institution noted.
'Our objective remains to support Romanian producers by opening new markets and strengthening existing ones. The possibility of signing contracts as early as this year for deliveries in 2027 could provide our farmers with the stability needed to plan production on an unprecedented scale,' said Alexandru Nicolae Bociu, President of ANSVSA, in the press release.
Exports of sheep to Algeria have increased significantly, from 321,040 head last year to an estimated 500,000 by the end of this year, confirming the potential of Romanian farmers on external markets.
