The rescuers of Grupo Especial de Rescate en Altura (GERA) from Madrid have completed an intensive training program carried out together with the Maramures County mountain rescue teams, the director of the Maramures County Public Mountain Rescue Service (SPJ Salvamont Maramures), Dan Benga, told AGERPRES on Thursday.

"It was an intensive collaboration between the two sides, and everyone learned something from the harshness of the mountain. During the seven days of joint training we worked together on hypothetical cases that could arise during an intervention (...) We tried all possible tactical exercises, simulated rescue operations specific to hard-to-reach areas under extreme conditions, and held first-aid workshops adapted to mountain rescue situations. The Maramures Mountains offer challenging terrain for training, and we can work through nearly all situations specific to high-altitude rescue," said Benga.

He also stressed that the joint training allowed each team to learn from the other's experience.

"The exercise carried out together with our colleagues from Madrid's Grupo Especial de Rescate en Altura has given us the opportunity to learn from each other's experience. I can say that Salvamont Maramures is in line with the European relevant standards," Dan Benga added.

The Salvamont Maramures teams have gained fame, including in international media, due to their sustained efforts in difficult weather conditions to rescue Ukrainian men who flee the war, crossing the mountain border through extremely dangerous areas.
