The mayor of Sighisoara, Ioan Iulian Sirbu, announced on Friday the issuance by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Authorization for the construction of the Sighisoara Ring Road, with a length of over 13 kilometers.

"Today, March 6, 2026, the authorization for the construction of the Sighisoara Ring Road was issued. It has all the signatures and approvals. God help us to have this important project completed," Ioan Iulian Sirbu announced on Facebook.

According to the project, the Sighisoara ring road will have one lane in each direction, the route branches off from National Road (DN) 13, in the eastern part of the municipality, near the town of Albesti, after which it heads northeast, returning to DN 13 near the town of Hetiur.

In the memoranda addressed to the Ministry of Transport, the Sighisoara municipality has emphasized, over time, that the city ring road is vital for protecting the Medieval Citadel, a UNESCO site, by separating heavy and transit traffic.

In 2020, the Sighisoara City Hall showed that traffic censuses indicate particularly intense traffic in the Sighisoara municipality area, especially on the exit route to Brasov, and that since 2005, over 27,000 vehicles were circulating here per day, the number being at least double today.

The document also stated that in Sighisoara, nicknamed the 'Pearl of Transylvania' since the end of the 19th century, the walls of the Medieval Citadel are undergoing a continuous process of degradation, one of the causes of this phenomenon being the strong and constant tremors caused by the heavy traffic that passes through the municipality, the European road E60 being in the vicinity of the UNESCO site.
