Several dozen people gathered on Friday evening at the entrance to Cotroceni Palace to ask President Nicusor Dan to reject the proposals of the Minister of Justice, Radu Marinescu, for the management positions at the General Prosecutor's Office, the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) and the Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT).
The protesters displayed eye-shaped banners and chanted slogans such as: "Independent prosecutors, not obedient ones", "We want integrity, not tarnished names", "We see you", "Nicusor, do something, defend justice".
They also displayed a banner with the messages: "Nicusor, we know what we chose. Do you see what you choose?" and "Cristina Chiriac [proposed for the position of prosecutor general] protected a child sex abuser! Now you're putting her in charge?".
At one point, President Nicusor Dan came out into the middle of the protesters and answered their questions about the names proposed for the leadership of the prosecutor's offices.
"I will assume the appointments that I will sign. The prosecutors will have my endorsement. I have about a hundred times more information about the prosecutor's office system in Romania than you do," the head of state replied to one of the protesters.
The president told those present that he would have regular meetings with the people appointed to the positions, and the results could be evaluated in about six months.
"You will see the results of these appointments in about six months from the moment they are appointed. These people must know the institution and work with the people they find there. Also, what I can tell you is that I will periodically meet with the heads of these institutions. (...) I am also a citizen and I see that justice has countless problems. We must solve them and we must, however, be patient, because it is like a long illness and there are power mechanisms, there are people who have established relationships with each other, it is very difficult to change a factual situation", said Nicusor Dan.
Civic organizations are asking President Nicusor Dan to reject the appointment of Cristina Chiriac as Prosecutor General, Viorel Cerbu as Chief Prosecutor of the DNA, and Marius Voineag and Alex Florenţa as deputies at the Prosecutor General's Office and DIICOT, respectively.
