Romanian tennis player Jaqueline Cristian on Thursday was defeated by Australian Kimberly Birrell, 5-7 6-1 7-5, in the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International WTA 500 tournament in Australia, prize money USD 1,206,446.
Qualifier Cristian, 27, ranked 37th, bowed out after more than three hours of play (3 h 04 min).
The Romanian managed to win the first set (7-5) after being down 5-2 and saved five set points. After losing the second set, she led 6-5 in the third set but lost the last three games of the set and the match.
Birrell made eight double faults, but also managed two aces, while Jaqueline Cristian had three aces and four double faults.
Cristian and Birrell, 27, ranked 107th, had met twice before on the professional circuit, with a head-to-head count tied at 1-1. In 2024, in the first round of the qualifiers at Hobart International, the Australian won 6-4 6-4, and Jaqueline Cristian won last year in the first round at the French Open, 6-1 6-0.
