Romania's Customs Authority (AVR) inspectors seized more than 255,000 cigarettes and nearly 230 liters of alcohol during traffic checks near the country's eastern and north-eastern borders, in operations targeting illicit trade in excisable goods.
Between March 4 - 6, mobile teams from AVR's central unit and the Brasov Regional Customs Directorate carried out surveillance and customs controls on routes commonly used to move goods toward Western Europe. According to AVR, the checks resulted in fines totaling 133,800 RON, the seizure of 255,800 cigarettes and 229.75 liters of alcohol, and two criminal complaints.
One major case was recorded in Pojorata, where inspectors stopped a van driven by a Ukrainian citizen who claimed to be transporting goods to Western Europe. The control uncovered 69,400 cigarettes intended for the illegal market.
A second significant case occurred at night near the access roads from the Oancea border crossing, where inspectors stopped a passenger coach bound for Italy. Searches of luggage and compartments revealed 186,400 cigarettes and 229.75 liters of alcohol transported illegally.
In both cases, the seized goods and evidence were handed over to prosecutors.
AVR says it will continue monitoring and control operations in high-risk areas to protect state revenues and combat smuggling.
