Romania is providing support to Republic of Moldova in managing a pollution incident on the Dniester River, with specialised equipment and materials required for the intervention being made available.
"Based on the Decision No. 3 of 12.03.2026 of the National Committee for Emergency Situations, Romania has provided international assistance, free of charge, to the Republic of Moldova, in the context of the emergency situation generated by the discharge of polluting substances in the upstream sector of the Dniester River," the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) said on its Facebook page on Friday.
The measure was adopted following a request submitted by the Environment Ministry of the Republic of Moldova, as well as based on the proposal made by the Department for Emergency Situations and the analysis carried out by the National Administration "Apele Romane" (Romanian Waters), in order to support the Moldovan authorities in managing the pollution incident.
In this context, the Romanian Waters made specialised equipment and materials available and formed a specialised intervention team, that traveled to Republic of Moldova in order to support actions aimed at limiting and collecting polluting substances from the surface of the water.
Moreover, the Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations (IGSU) provided personnel to coordinate the mission, as well as transport for the equipment and materials required for the intervention.
The intervention team arrived in the Republic of Moldova on Friday morning, together with the specialised equipment and materials, and began support activities for managing the pollution incident on the Dniester River.
The assistance provided consisted of the following items: 200 m of hessian cloth; 600 kg of absorbent material; 2,000 m of absorbent roll; 30 oil traps; 112 m of absorbent boom, the quoted source said.
The support action is being carried out through the cooperation between the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, through their specialised structures, in order to support the authorities in Republic of Moldova in managing the pollution incident and limiting its impact on the environment.
Depending on the needs identified, the assistance provided will be supplemented in order to contribute to the efficient management of the situation generated, the Department for Emergency Situations mentioned.
