Romania and the Republic of Moldova are intensifying their cooperation in the field of transport infrastructure, with an emphasis on accelerating joint projects aimed at strengthening connectivity between the two countries, informs a press release from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of the Republic of Moldova.

The subject was discussed on Monday during a meeting between the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development of the Republic of Moldova, Vladimir Bolea, and the Secretary of State within the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania, Irinel Ionel Scriosteanu.

"In recent years, we have managed to build a constant and real openness in Moldovan-Romanian relations in the field of infrastructure. In the coming years, we want to transform this openness into concrete projects, with visible results for people and the economy. Our objective is to fully integrate the Republic of Moldova into European transport corridors and thus stimulate exports and the country's economic development," said Vladimir Bolea, quoted in the press release.

The discussions were also attended by the state secretaries of the Moldovan Ministry of Infrastructure, Mircea Pascaluta and Nicolai Mindra.

The officials analyzed the main directions of collaboration for the current year, with the objective of accelerating the implementation of joint road and railway infrastructure projects and creating better conditions for the movement of goods and passengers between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

In the railway sector, the discussions focused on the opening of traffic on the Cantemir-Falciu section, as well as the preparation for the reopening of the Cahul-Galati line, located on the Prut River and intended mainly for freight transport. At the same time, the possibility of launching a passenger train on the Cahul-Galati route was analyzed, which would contribute to increasing the accessibility of the southern region of the Republic of Moldova to the Romanian railway network.

The start of work on the first electrified railway section on the Iasi-Ungheni segment was also discussed, as well as the support offered by the Romanian authorities for the development of the feasibility study on the construction of the European-gauge railway line between Ungheni and Chisinau. In this context, the structural reform of the Moldovan Railways (CFM) was also mentioned, which is to be divided into two distinct entities, in order to streamline the activity and attract strategic investments.

Regarding road infrastructure, the officials discussed the progress of work on the Ungheni-Ungheni Bridge, the first bridge over the Prut River built at highway level between the two states, as well as its commissioning in the autumn of 2026. At the same time, the development of border infrastructure was addressed, with an emphasis on a common strategy for the modernization of border crossing points and related transport infrastructure, to streamline traffic and reduce waiting times.

In the river transport segment, the parties discussed intensifying cooperation to deepen the navigable channel of the Prut River, in order to relaunch river freight transport and capitalize on the logistical potential of the riparian regions.

The discussions also focused on the support provided by Romania for the integration of the Republic of Moldova into European initiatives for financing and securing transport infrastructure, including through the "Action for the Security of Europe" (SAFE) instrument, which aims to facilitate the connections of the Republic of Moldova with the European space and strengthen regional connectivity.
