President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday he hopes 2026 could become a year of peace in Europe, adding that Romania supports US President Donald Trump's efforts to secure a swift and lasting peace, underpinned by firm security guarantees for Ukraine, to which Romania is ready to contribute.
"I hope that 2026 can be a year of peace in Europe. Romania supports President Trump's efforts to negotiate a rapid and durable peace, with strong security guarantees for Ukraine, to which we are prepared to contribute substantially. From Romania's perspective, the way the conflict in our neighbouring country is resolved will have a major impact on the future of security in Europe. It is essential that the founding values of collective security remain unchanged: the principles of the UN Charter, independence, sovereignty and the territorial integrity of states," Nicusor Dan said at the annual meeting with the heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Romania.
According to the head of state, peace in Ukraine represents "a crucial test" that he hopes will be successfully passed, and he stressed the need for the Russian Federation to abandon its "counterproductive" approach.
"It is necessary for the Russian Federation to give up its counterproductive approach and to stop undermining peace efforts. Unfortunately, there are no signs that Russia is genuinely interested in negotiations and, in this context, I believe that only increased pressure, including through sanctions, can bring it to the negotiating table," Nicusor Dan added.
He also said that Romania will be involved in Ukraine's reconstruction process, both directly and by encouraging the deep modernisation required by integration into the European Union.
"Our solidarity with the Ukrainian people will continue in 2026 across all the dimensions already known - humanitarian, political, economic and security-related," the president said.
