President Nicusor Dan on Monday congratulated the president-elect of Portugal, Antonio Jose Seguro, emphasising in his message the deep friendship connecting the two states.
"Congratulations and best wishes to Antonio Jose Martins Seguro for his recent election as president of the Republic of Portugal! I am confident that the deep friendship connecting Romania and Portugal, which is rooted in our cultural heritage, linguistic affinities and close ties between our peoples will evolve to the benefit of both our countries and peoples. I look forward to working with him to further strengthen our excellent collaboration," the head of state wrote on Facebook.
Moderate socialist Antonio Jose Seugor on Sunday won the second round of the presidential elections in Portugal defeating his right wing opponent, Andre Ventura, by a clear margin, according to reports by two national television stations based on exit polls, AFP reported.
Seguro, 63, received between 67 and 73 per cent of the votes, while his opponent, Ventura, 43, received between 27 and 33 per cent.
Seguro is set to take over from the outgoing Conservative president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who had a ten-year term, in early March.
