Several vehicles, including a patrol car were wrecked on Friday during a high-speed pursuit on the national road DN 17 in Suceava County, representatives of the Suceava County Police Inspectorate (IPJ) announced.
According to them, the Police were notified on Friday afternoon about a theft of a car from the Manastirea Humorului commune, which was left running with the keys in the ignition. The Police set up several several roadblocks to identify the vehicle and intercept it.
"Approximately 45 minutes after the notification, at the entrance to the municipality of Campulung Moldovenesc, a patrol car intercepted the stolen vehicle in traffic, traveling on DN 17, from Gura Humorului to Vatra Dornei. The driver refused to stop and increased his speed towards the center of the municipality, being pursued by the police car with the acoustic and light signals on. At the center of the municipality, the traffic being congested, the driver of the pursued vehicle braked suddenly to avoid impact with the car traveling in front of him. The policewoman behind at the wheel of the cruiser also braked but skidded, turned right to avoid impact with the pursued car, hit a building and a bus, with the left rear part of the cruiser", Suceava informed.
The driver of the pursued vehicle continued driving for another 200 meters, and shortly after collided with three other vehicles that were traveling legally, stopping in a curb.
The man got out of the car and tried to flee, but was immediately apprehended by the police crew.
"The event resulted in no victims, but only material damage to all the vehicles involved, including the police car. Our colleague was tested with a breathalyzer, and the result was negative. The thief, a 31-year-old man from the commune of Manastirea Humorului, refused to be tested with a breathalyzer and a drug test," added Suceava Police representatives.
The driver has been detained.
