Romanian tourists prefer the ski resorts of Poiana Brasov and the Prahova Valley for their winter holidays, with an average stay of two nights, according to a survey by online travel agency Travelminit.

The survey, published Tuesday, shows that average nightly rates in major mountain resorts have risen moderately compared to last season.

In Poiana Brasov, the average price is €164 per night, up from €148 in 2024 (+11%). In Sinaia, the rate reached €114, compared to €107 last season. In Busteni prices climbed steeper, from €97 to €111 (+14%), while in Predeal the average price rose from €111 to €122 (+10%).

The two-night average stay suggests most tourists opt for short weekend breaks or mini-vacations rather than longer trips.

Comfort and proximity to the slopes remain key factors in accommodation choices. In Poiana Brasov, 63% of bookings are in hotels and 17% in guesthouses. Predeal records one of the highest hotel shares at 66%, with guesthouses accounting for 28%. In Sinaia, hotels attract 56% of tourists and guesthouses 15%, while in Busteni hotels represent 41% of reservations and guesthouses 16%.

On the other hand, smaller resorts such as Harghita Madaras, Ranca, Baile Tusnad and the Transalpina slopes appeal to visitors seeking authentic experiences, easier slope access and fewer crowds.

Travelminit notes that beyond accommodation and transport, tourists must factor in equipment and ski pass costs. In Harghita Madaras, a one-day adult ski pass starts at 160 - 180 RON, while renting a full ski or snowboard set costs 90 - 110 RON per day. In Ranca, a standard pass is about 150 RON for adults and 100 RON for children, with equipment rental at 25 - 30 RON per day for a complete set.

Founded in 2017 in Cluj-Napoca, Travelminit lists more than 10,000 accommodation units - hotels, guesthouses and apartments - active on its platform and app.
