PNL Political Bureau nominates Rector of 'Stefan cel Mare' University in Suceava for Education minister

The National Political Bureau of the National Liberal Party (PNL) unanimously approved on Monday the nomination of Mihai Dimian, Professor and Rector of 'Stefan cel Mare' University in Suceava, for the position of Minister of Education and Research.

According to a PNL statement, the proposal was made by party Chairman and Prime Minister of Romania Ilie Bolojan. During the meeting, Dimian presented his vision for reforming and developing the education sector.

PNL notes that Mihai Dimian is backed as an independent, with the mission of contributing to the development of Romania's education system in line with the governing program, while continuing efforts to improve efficiency in the field.

Dimian is a university professor and PhD supervisor at 'Stefan cel Mare' University, where he has served as rector since 2024. He holds degrees in physics and mathematics from 'Alexandru Ioan Cuza' University in Iasi. He has studied and conducted research in France at the University of Versailles, earned a PhD in electrical and electronic engineering at the University of Maryland (US), and worked as a researcher at the Max Planck Institute in Germany. He later became assistant and then associate professor and PhD supervisor at Howard University in Washington, D.C., the release also shows.

PNL highlights Dimian's strong academic and managerial achievements, including numerous projects to develop teaching and research infrastructure, attract young researchers and international academics, and expand the university's study programs. He currently coordinates the largest investment program in the university's history, aimed at developing a second campus. He has been involved in developing more than 30 new university study programs, significantly expanding the educational offering of 'Stefan cel Mare' University in Suceava.

Mihai Dimian also maintains close collaboration with pre-university education, organizing national and international science competitions and camps, and regularly meeting with school leaders and visiting schools in the region. He has never been a member of any political party.
