Prime Minister Viorica Dancila on Thursday met the President of the World Jewish Congress, Ronald Lauder, in the context of her current working visit to Brussels, reads a press release of the Executive sent to AGERPRES.
The meeting occasioned a "substantial" exchange of opinions on Romania's cooperation with the Jewish organisations, as well as on education of the civil society at European and international level in the spirit of tolerance, non-discrimination, combat of Anti-Semitism and cultivation of the memory of the Holocaust.
Also, both parties showed concern related to some populist-extremist and Anti-Semitic trends seen in Europe in the recent while, which are also reflected at political level, while appreciating at the same time the need for strengthening efforts to combat them, including through educating the younger generation.
Dancila reaffirmed, on the same occasion, the constant commitment of Romania to the fight against Anti-Semitism and thanked the World Jewish Congress for its involvement in the Laude-Reut Complex in Bucharest in developing educational projects for the younger generation.
At the same time, both parties highlighted their wish to amplify this cooperation and strengthen the relation of confidence and honest and open dialogue. The Romanian official informed about the Bucharest Government's intention to invite all the special representatives for fighting Anti-Semitism to Romania for a meeting.
The President of the World Jewish Congress, Ronald Lauder, thanked Romania for the constant and dedicated effort made in acknowledging its historic past, as well as in honouring the memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
He also invited the Prime Minister of Romania to pay a visit to New York, in this year's autumn.
Ronald Lauder became the President of the World Jewish Congress, which represents the Jewish communities and organisations in more than 100 of the world's states, in June 2007. The Jewish World Congress was founded in 1936, in Geneva, and negotiates, in the name of the communities, with governments, parliaments and other international organisations.
In 1986, Ronald Lauder was designated Ambassador to Austria by President Reagan. Later, his activity focused on revitalizing the Jewish communities in Central and Eastern Europe, affected by what happened during the Holocaust and also during the communist regime.
In 1987, he laid the foundation of the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, which now has 37 branches in different states.
