Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan says that Romania could participate in demining missions in the Strait of Hormuz, but only after a truce is reached in the Middle East.
"Romania's agreement in principle is to participate in missions that are within our possibilities in the demining area, for example, in the surveillance area. But that is after the war zone is no longer in an aggressive zone, and after a form of armistice is reached, so that these demining operations can really be carried out. Romania has so far been present where it was requested - when there was a need for a presence in Bosnia, in certain theatres, after the conflicts were over- in order to calm down the situation. And if Romania had a consolidated image, it is also because our army, where it was, proved that it is a professional army and has done its duty," the prime minister told Euronews private broadcaster.
Bolojan agrees with the temporary deployment of American equipment in Romania, amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
"We have this war in the Gulf, and the United States, from whose umbrella Romania and NATO have benefited all these years, have asked us for support. On the one hand, there was the one related to the use of military bases, and when the partner whose protection has ensured your security in recent years - along with the protection of NATO and the other NATO countries - asks for support, I think you have to give it. And I think Romania did well what it did when we made our military bases available for supply planes," he said.
In the prime minister's opinion, the year 2026 will not be a "very easy" one for Europe amid the wars in Ukraine and Iran.
"There will be these effects, but it is a year in which, apart from the global context, some things are also up to us. And we must do what's incumbent on the Romanian government and each of us where we are. And I believe that there are good premises, that if we keep financial discipline, if we put into practice the European projects, if we carry out the reforms that we have set for ourselves - no one forced us to do them - and if we create conditions for the economy that highlight the best of Romania and be more competitive, we can create better conditions for Romanians in the years ahead," said Bolojan.
