His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church conveyed a message of compassion and solidarity on Monday following the tragic railway accident that occurred on Sunday in Spain.

"I learned with deep sorrow of the tragic railway accident that took place near the town of Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba, southern Spain, a tragedy that resulted in at least 39 fatalities and more than 100 injured. In these moments of profound suffering for the families of those who lost their lives, we extend our sincere condolences and assure them of our full compassion and solidarity. We also stand with those who were injured and are currently receiving medical care, and we pray for their swift recovery," Patriarch Daniel said, agerpres reports.

The senior hierarch also called on Romanian Orthodox believers residing in Spain "to offer material and spiritual support to those affected, through acts of mercy, prayer, and words of consolation and encouragement."

"We pray to God for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for the healing of those hospitalized. We stand with the Spanish people, who are now going through moments of deep suffering and pain," Patriarch Daniel's message further states.

An Iryo train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed on Sunday shortly after 7:30 p.m. and entered the tracks on which an Alvia train was traveling at 200 kilometers per hour in the opposite direction, heading toward Huelva. A total of 484 passengers were affected, traveling on both trains. The cause of the derailment is currently unknown. The death toll has reached 39, according to sources close to the investigation who spoke on Monday with the EFE news agency. A total of 73 people remain hospitalized, 24 of them in serious condition, including four minors.
